The form book: racing and football guides

Practical guides to reading a result, from the fields in a race record to the stages of a knockout match. Each guide includes examples, a quick-reference table and links to the relevant source definitions.

New to horse racing results?

Start with the finishing order and runner fields. Then explore distances, going and the status labels that tell you whether an early result is complete.

  1. Read the basic race record
  2. Understand distances and margins
  3. Check result and runner statuses

Following a football match?

Learn how the team order, score and status work together. For knockout football, read the extra-time guide before interpreting a penalty outcome.

Use the explanation alongside the record

Start with the question

If you want to know who won, begin with the score or finishing order and its status. If you want to compare performances, you will need more context: distance, conditions, timing conventions and which fields are actually available. The guides distinguish what a record establishes from what it cannot tell you.

Check the convention

Providers can display the same result differently. A beaten margin may be measured from the winner or the previous finisher. A football score field can be cumulative or describe one match stage. Use the reference tables and worked examples before deciding two records conflict.

For a brief definition, use the sports glossary. For questions about availability or delays, read data and coverage. If a statement appears incorrect, the corrections page explains how to prepare a useful report.
